Dunlop
History of Dunlop brand
In 1888 John Boyd Dunlop invented and patented the pneumatic tyre for racing bicycles, which in the following years revolutionised the bicycle and automobile industry. A year later, the Dunlop brand was established, which was initially dedicated to the manufacture of tyres. The brand's headquarters and factory were then located in Japan, in the city of Kobe.
Brand development
The first entry into the sports market came in 1909, when Dunlop launched the first golf ball. The brand then entered the tennis ball market.
In 1932, Dunlop introduced the revolutionary and iconic Maxply tennis racquet. This model became the most famous racquet in the world at the time and was used by true legends such as Rod Laver and John McEnroe. More Dunlop racquets appeared at Wimbledon in 1936 than any other brand. Rod Laver won all four Grand Slams in 1962 playing with a Dunlop Maxply racket.
Another innovation came in 1982, when Dunlop created a racquet made of carbon fibre. With the legendary Dunlop 200G racket, Steffi Graff won the "Golden Slam" in 1988.
Dunlop is currently the official tournament partner of the Australian Open and many tournaments on the ATP Tour.
