The new ball can, which replaced the golden HEAD packaging known on courts all over the world, contains less plastic and is much easier to recycle.
Sample tests carried out in collaboration with the Austrian recycling company Saubermacher showed the potential for a 10-fold reduction in CO2 emissions compared to existing packages.
The new design of the ball can implements the HEAD Rethink ecological initiative.
In the production of packaging used PET material from recycled production waste, shorter sleeve, less dyes and less intense colors - to make cans easier to recycle.
As Simon Brenneis, HEAD Business Manager for Balls and Footwear, explains: “What we did now was sleeve length reduction by more than 50%. This allows the cans to be identifiable as being fit for recycling. This in turn means more recycled material and more resources saved.”
Availability of new plastics and materials as well as development of processing technology and machinery recycling means that the new ball packaging will move up the recycling hierarchy from the incinerated product fully recycled for reuse. “Now users are taking over – just that clubs and tennis players will make sure to find ways to recycle packaging, and you will get the maximum environmental benefits.”
