The Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament, also known as the French Open, is one of the most prestigious events in world tennis. It is held annually in Paris, on the clay courts named after the heroic aviator Roland Garros. The best male and female tennis players from around the world come to Paris in May to soar to the clouds like the heroes of the past, and more than 30,000 spectators watch them compete on the one-of-a-kind clay court. In this article we will introduce the history, significance and characteristics of this unique tournament.

History and significance

Roland Garros has a rich history dating back to 1891, when the first tournament was held on... grass. It was not until 1912 that the surface was changed to clay flour. Even later, since it wasn't until 1928 that the tournament was named after Roland Garros - the French aviation pioneer and World War I hero who was the first to fly over the Mediterranean. This happened at the request of his friend, the president of the legendary Stade Francais club. And since then, the tournament on the Roland Garros courts is the only Grand Slam tournament held on the dirt but bearing the name of the ace of the skies.

Roland Garros facilities and courts

The Roland Garros tournament is held at the complex of the same name, located in the western part of Paris. The facility consists of several courts, the most important of which are Court Philippe Chatrier, Court Suzanne Lenglen and Court Simonne Mathieu. The courts at the French Open are made of a clay surface, which gives the tournament a unique character and influences the players' style of play. The clay surface is widely considered to be slower, with the ball bouncing off it, making a high roll. In addition, it is a weather-changing surface, which means that there is more than one surprise waiting for players during Roland Garros - depending on the weather.

The champions

Not every tennis champion suits the conditions on the courts of the Grand Slam French Open. It happened that the world's top tennis players were never able to pass the Roland Garros ladder , while others like the French Open so much that they only win here. In the history of the Roland Garros tournament, there have been many legendary tennis players and tennis players who have gone down in gold in the annals of this event. Roland Garros' greatest champions include such icons as Rafael Nadal, Björn Borg and Gustavo Kuerten, who have won multiple titles on the Roland Garros courts. Women include Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams, who have also achieved much success in Paris. In the recent history of this tournament, the achievements of Iga Swiatek, the 2020 and 2022 champion, are certainly noteworthy.

Great fights

The Roland Garros tournament witnessed unforgettable fights that will forever be remembered by tennis fans. The 1984 final between John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl is one of the most exciting encounters in the tournament's history. Similarly, the 2009 final, in which Roger Federer faced Robin Söderling, provided an unforgettable experience.

Characteristics of the tournament

The Roland Garros tournament is held in both men's and women's singles and doubles formats. Players compete in a knockout system, progressing through the rungs of the Roland Garros ladder until the final. Roland Garros encompasses a variety of age categories, from juniors to the senior competition. Winners receive not only prestigious titles, but also generous financial rewards. The Roland Garros final is a major media event, and the names of the champion and champion of the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament are traditionally immortalized on the silver cup - the grand prize of the French Open.

Development and innovation

The Roland Garros tournament is constantly evolving, introducing new technologies and amenities. In recent years, a roof was introduced on the Philippe Chatrier center court, allowing the tournament to continue even in bad weather. In addition, the Hawk-Eye system was introduced to help referee difficult situations on the court.

Roland Garros 2023

This year's edition of Roland Garros, like every year, is an event that has attracted huge interest from fans and media alike. This year's Roland Garros will feature many stars of men's tennis, headed by Novak Djokovic; among the ladies, Sabalenka, Pegula and, of course, Elena Rybakina - Iga Swiatek's great rival - will compete at Roland Garros.

The big absentee from this year's French Open is, of course, its 14-time winner Rafa Nadal, for whom the French Open is a beloved Grand Slam and an arena where he could always rise to the highest. This year, Sir Andy Murray will also leave Roland Garros - although in the case of the Scotsman it is difficult to speak of a painful abandonment of the tournament on his favorite surface. Mateo Berrettini, Pablo Careno Busta and Nick Kyrgios will also not greet the Roland Garros tournament this year. As for the women, we already know that Emma Raducanu will leave Roland this year. Paula Badosa has also withdrawn.

The start of Roland Garros has been scheduled for May 28 and the Roland Garros grand final will be held on June 10 for the women and - a day later for the men. Polish fans are certainly waiting for the next achievements of Iga Swiatek - she is, of course, already assured a place in the Roland Garros main ladder. It is hard to imagine the tournament in Paris without Iga's participation in her favorite Grand Slam tennis tournament. She is probably dreaming of another Roland Garros singles championship, and we hope that Iga Swiatek will again prove to be unrivaled. All of us in Poland will certainly keep our fingers crossed for our champion and watch the French Open live with her participation. We hope that she will reach at least the final of the French Open - but of course, we want her to triumph in this entire Grand Slam tournament. In addition to Iga, Magda Linette and Magdalena Fręch will, of course, fight in the Roland Garros main ladder. The only Pole who will take part in the French Open tennis tournament this year will be Hubert Hurkacz.
